Cargo-D was aboard the Friday 11th's 20.21 Doncaster - KX service after a day of intensive training, which saw the set operate from London to Doncaster and cover three return Doncaster to Peterborough training trips. The set rode beautifully at high speed and we were also able to help the on-train staff where needed and meet and greet some of the 'faithful' who had turned out to ride in the set. The set didn't disappoint, 86101 riding into KX horn blasting, a good 5 minutes ahead of schedule.
On a more serious note, it's conclusive proof that such a train can be operated on today's fragmented network. A lightweight, high power-to-weight ratio electric push-pull set that can attain 110mph with ease is, we believe, a winning formula. Our thanks go to Hull Trains, GBRf and National Express at Bounds Green. Also special thanks must go to Electric Traction Ltd for providing 86101.
The MkIIIs and 86101 have completed 3 weekends of successful operation (dated at time of writing 27th January), but will not be operating next weekend due to an engineering possession. We'll keep you updated if there are any (more) changes.
